Cold Comfort
a short story in Unbound
written with Claire Bartlett
So, yes, I've got a (not very) short story in Unbound: Adventures in Time and Space, a forthcoming Doctor Who anthology. Cold Comfort is written by the fab Claire Bartlett and myself. You can learn more about this book here.
Notes
A bit after the Unbound series was produced by Big Finish, Claire and I pitched a story, should there be a second run. That story was called Cold Comfort. We really put a lot into the development of the story.
The starting point for the Unbound series was to ask "What if...?" about a part of Doctor Who lore. Our story starts with two questions... what if the Doctor didn't get the bat's milk on Androzani Minor (in The Caves of Androzani) and the second question is... what if the Doctor died?
So we started with the quote from The Master in The Five Doctors "a universe without the Doctor scarcely bears thinking about."
The picture to the left is a bit of a hint to the story and how we tell it. It's what happened to the Doctor and Peri after the events on Androzani Minor. It's also a giveaway that we wrote this version of the story in the style of a Target novelisation. If you're a Doctor Who fan, you'll know what the Target novelisations are. If you're not and you don't... they're the novelisations of the TV stories. Before downloads, before DVD, before videos... the novelisations were how we experienced classic old stories. Some of them were short and basic kids' novels but some were just extraordinary. They were told with flair and originality and style, and they added so much detail and background to the original TV scripts. I read those books over and over when I was a kid. There are over 150 of them and I still have a more than full collection of them. I have many different editions of the same titles. I adore these books. Our story, Cold Comfort, is written in the style of these books, and even uses some of the chapter titles that cropped up regularly in the books,
It's enough of a homage for me to have bodged together this cod-cover to show how the book might have looked.
