The Brigadier
There have been a lot of interesting, fascinating and popular supporting characters in Doctor Who but I don't think any of them have resonated or had the impact that Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart had. He didn't even need his full name, he was just The Brigadier. Absolutely reliable, utterly resolute, fearlessly brave and completely loyal, he was the Doctor's friend for 10 regenerations, standing by his side to face every threat that came their way, from Yeti in the Underground to Zygons in the Highland to a witch from another dimension by way of Daleks and giant maggots. My dad was a soldier... in fact a lot of my family were in the forces so the UNIT stories resonated with me. Writing for the Brigadier was as big of a thrill for me as writing for the Doctor.
